Looking back on Brighton in the 80s, 90s By Sophie Cornish NEW BRIGHTON in the 80s and 90s will feature in a documentary. Facebook page PierPeoples founder Todd Gibson has called the film A Generation Lost which will look back on a great era in New Brighton’s social history.

Surfers, skateboarders and musicians will be among the people interviewed for the documentary, which Mr Gibson hopes will be finished by the end of summer. The idea came about when talking about New Brighton with friends, joking that they could write a book about all the stories

they have. “Then, one day, I was just sitting around going through Netflix documentaries and thought hang on a minute, I’ve got a camera and I know how to use it. The idea just came to me.” The film will be interviewbased. “There’s so many stories that could come out of it that, in all

honesty, when I think about it, it gets a bit overwhelming,” said Mr Gibson. He hopes the title A Generation Lost will highlight a great era that is now lost in time. The film will be available online and Mr Gibson hopes to have a screening somewhere in New Brighton when it is released. •From the editor, page 2

The plan will then go to Regenerate Christchurch which will then use it to consult the community on issues like the red zone, coastal hazards and climate change. Called the How Team, it will be made up of about eight residents. An application process is under way. Regenerate, the city council and Environment Canterbury will also be represented. About 2000 households from Rodney St south to the end of Rockinghorse Rd are the focus of the study. Said team convener Rachel Puentener: “It is difficult to know how to have a conversation with all of these people about something as complex as the impacts of climate change.” Ms Puentener lives in South New Brighton and works parttime for Renew Brighton and Environment Canterbury. Renew Brighton is a community development organisation and charitable trust which was formed following the earthquakes with the aim of connecting various groups.

I’M LOOKING forward to the doco Todd Gibson is doing on Brighton in the 80s and 90s (see page 1). McCormacks and the Esplanade (Espie) across the road were top of the list. You could cruise the streets from New Brighton to South Brighton and never be short of finding a party, and you’d never be turned away . . . most of the time anyway. There were the burger bars in Seaview Rd and down a bit further on Hardy St that were patronised on a regular basis. A cheese, bacon and pineapple burger and a piece of fish, or a toasted sandwich, depending on how much money you had left in your pocket. Scoop of chips? Not normally – there’d be too many of your mates who would want to eat them for you. Great memories! –Barry Clarke

Students create housing concepts By Sophie Cornish ARA INSTITUTE of Canterbury students are investigating the idea of co-housing villages in New Brighton. The plot of land in question is on the corner of Beresford and Mafeking Sts and is currently a public car park. Co-housing started in Denmark Irene in 1960, with the Boles idea that ‘it takes 100 parents to raise a child’. It is community-based and sees people share tasks, such as childcare, gardening, cleaning, communal dining and food production. The idea is based around living sustainability and gives emphasis to open, shared spaces, including vegetable gardens, bike sharing, tool sheds, children’s areas and gardens. Engineering and architectural studies tutor Irene Boles said the students hope their concepts will inspire the community and suggest possible scenarios for affordable, quality housing. The students investigated different housing solutions starting

from only 45 sq m of space, which can adapt and grow with the needs of a family. The focus is on environmentally-friendly medium density villages and all houses would be elevated to meet flood management requirements. The land is currently owned by Development Christchurch Ltd, a city council entity set up following the earthquakes. DCL is not associated with the students’ project, but is looking at the possibility of

transforming the area into affordable housing in the future. Ms Boles says a development like this would thrive and expand quickly due to the diverse and inclusive community in New Brighton. Suitable materials for coastal conditions were also used it the designs, which age well and don’t require chemical treatments. The project is part of a course called ‘Design for Social Sustainability’ for a Bachelor of

Architectural Studies degree at Ara. Ms Boles got the idea for the project after meeting with members of the New Brighton Sustainable Coastal Village Project. The project was founded in 2013 and has been pushing for the idea on the plot of land since. Ms Boles hopes her students’ research and proposals will inspire more people join the group and help the project go ahead.

AVON RIVER LITTER CAGE A new litter cage with booms on either side has been installed on the Avon River. The previous boom was removed due to earthquake damage. The boom has been placed on Dallington Tce, below the outlet for Dudley Creek. The litter cage has a one-way flap or gate, with large booms either side of the gate. Once the litter is in the cage, it cannot be dislodged. SILVER BAND HALL LEASE The Coastal-Burwood Community Board has approved a new lease to the New Brighton Silver Band Inc for the hall at Rawhiti Domain. The lease is for a period of up to 33 years. The band’s hall is used regularly for full band rehearsals and the individual tuition of youth players. The hall is also used by other Christchurch music groups as a rehearsal space. The band was founded in 1890 and has had a long association with the city’s east.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF VET MICHELE Last month, our super vet nurse Megan wrote about what a nurses day is like at our clinic so I thought I’d give you a little insight into one of my marathon 12 hour Tuesdays, that must start with a flat white! I typically arrive in after 9am due to organizing our teenage lads for school in the morning and walking Lola before our big 12 hour Tuesday. I will then assess, liase with the hospital nurse and devise a plan for any of my sick hospital patients from the previous day. Sometimes I will pass an intensive care patient of mine onto Catherine if my day is full surgically. If there is time before consulting I will phone clients with patient updates or call them in the early afternoon when I’ve finished consulting. Typically I consult seeing patients for 3-4 hours in the morning and then again another 3 hours during the evening. By the time Tuesdays rock around my consulting schedule is almost full so when distressed clients phone with a very sick pet, obviously we will see them but they have to be squeezed into an already full block of consulting. If on arrival they are in urgent need of attention, either I will see them or one of our expert nurses will triage the patient, often take bloods, place a catheter and advise me of their findings. Every patient that rings is seen that day and often we see patients from other clinics because they cant be seen that day at their own Practice. It is common place that during my morning consults I have admitted sick patients for either blood testing, intravenous fluids, xrays or ultrasounds, dentistry, exploratory surgeries, or just observation. I will check on these patients progress, review any blood test results or findings, ring their owners if necessary and work out a treatment plan with the hospital nurse for that day. Once the sickies are dealt with, I turn my attention to the surgical board in which all my surgeries are highlighted in green pen! This past Tuesday was a little insane... Heres my list for that day1. Right Stifle surgery in a sweet 1 year old Golden Retriever called “Bonnie” to repair ruptured ACL ligaments. Bonnie blew her ACL ligaments in both stifles while out exercising with other dogs, so the left is yet to be repaired in 2 weeks depending on how she’s coping after this surgery. 2. A right femoral pinning and wiring in a young cat “Simba” to repair a fractured femur probably caused by a collision with a car. 3. Full shoulder and elbow, spinal, lumbar and hip xrays in Murphy, a 12 year old chocolate Labrador with an annoying persistent right foreleg lameness. 4. A sick, lethargic Chinchilla called Pickles who needed syringe feeding through the day. 5. A Caesarian in a 2 year old Pug called “Geraldine”, who gave birth to 1 live puppy, with 2 unfortunately dying. All in all I have absolutely no time to eat, drink or get into any trouble!! All the above need to be finished with and owners rung by 4pm when I start all over again with consults. Oh I forgot to mention that somewhere in the

day I have a board full of messages to call clients regarding their pets blood or pathology Geraldine and her one little puppy. results, medications requirements, booking in surgeries, queries from other vets or just general advice inquiries. We also look after sick animals for the SPCA and Cats Protection league. We will get a call alerting us to how far away they are and what sort of patient we are seeing, whether a medical or surgical case. That can happen anytime in our day so we fit these consultations around everything else. I feel very good being able to help these less fortunate animals and hopefully give them a chance at recovery and a great life. A day in MY LIFE is a hugely busy, fast paced one where I need to make so many important decisions in a day on the health and well being of the patients in my care. There is no time to second guess yourself, communication between my staff and my clients is key and I need to be very organized and able to prioritise all the patients in my care needing my help. We are so fortunate at McMaster & Heap to have such a highly skilled, clever and practical group of vets and nurses to be able to bounce ideas off when a difficult case needs a plan. Honestly I LOVE my job – actually it’s a priviledge to be able to help animals in the way we can and do. As you can see, every day is extremely different, very challenging at times with difficult medical cases or surgeries but the buck stops with me so to speak. I leave after my 12 hour shift very tired and hungry! But with a big smile on my face knowing that I’ve made a difference in many animals lives that day and so have my fabulous team.

council are in the process of developing a liquor ban for the area after calls from the community and local businesses. Calls police have ignored twice, once in 2014 and once last year. Previously police said they didn’t have sufficient resources to enforce a ban and the problem wasn’t bad enough. But at the LinwoodCentral-Heathcote Com-

munity Board meeting on Monday, the ban was approved. This time police were the ones lobbying for it. Businesses, residents and officers spoke to the board for more than an hour. They said people drinking and begging outside shops are driving away and intimidating customers. They said the liquor ban would help.

Village may get liquor ban Constable Conal Ross who patrols the Linwood area said the incidents of anti-social behaviour from drinking and smoking synthetic drugs are becoming more “frequent.” From business owners, workers and shoppers feeling unsafe and no longer shopping at all – Constable Ross said the behaviour is taking its toll and with police only able to issue tickets to those using drugs, its not enough. A local shop owner, who did not want to be named, said a ban would stop profits diving. It has been a long standing issue for three or four years. “It’s also just the hanging outside . . . we’ve had customers ringing up and say we love your shop but we’re not coming in anymore,” he said. Drinking is “definitely” putting shoppers off, according to supermarket owner Choy Ming Lee. “We call the police but they say they can’t do anything,” he said. A liquor ban will give police the power to finally do something, Mr Lee said. City councillor Deon Swiggs said this had been an issue on his radar since he was first elected more than a year ago. “We’ve been trying to deal with

victions will only make it harder for them to get jobs. It’s just moving the problem elsewhere, not solving anything. “We all make mistakes. We all want a job. But its the background . . . there are a lot of reasons that turn guys to the bottle or the can to cope,” he said. Mr Hauwai said most of the beggars, don’t want to be there either. “It’s a pride thing. It’s degrading.” The pair are working with the city council to set up a drop-in centre for the area. Mr Wallace said it would give streeties an opportunity to have access to education, work skills and even simple things like fixing their bicycles. “That’ll get rid of us. It’ll give us somewhere to go,” Mr Wallace said. “We don’t need a liquor ban. What we need is a second chance and a lot of hope.” But Mr Wallace and Mr Hauwai said they do understand where the shops are coming from. “But why arrest a person because they are drinking. I understand if he’s fighting or hitting someone but not just drinking,” Mr Wallace said. The liquor ban will go before the city council at a meeting in the coming months.

Marshland pupils take $1500 prize for scooter invention PUPILS AT Marshland School have been rewarded with $1500 for their scooter shelter engineering concept. The engineering team of 14 pupils, including teachers Dave Sutherland and Bex Osborn, were second equal in the junior section of the 2017 Transpower Neighbourhood Engineers Awards. They will be presented with a cheque of $1500 which will go towards new STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) equipment for the school to build up their resources in this area. Mr Sutherland said it was the first time the school had entered the nationwide competition and year 5-8 pupils who had shown an interest and ability in engineering were chosen. “We try to look for authentic learning experiences for our pupils, so some real life problemsolving is ideal,” said Mr Sutherland. Pupils worked with an engineer who was assigned by the awards programme to identify a problem in the community and work to find a resolution. The pupils noted that during school time, their scooters were left out uncovered by the elements and proposed the idea of a

Disc golf course ready to launch in Queenspark By Sophie Cornish A NINE-HOLE disc golf course will be trialled at Queenspark Reserve and parts of it may be open before Christmas. Parklands Residents’ Association chairman David Baines is pleased to have the support from the Coastal-Burwood Community Board, which approved the course at its meeting last week, pending advice from the city council parks unit. “Now the real work begins, it’s been a long time to get to this stage,” said Mr Baines.

The residents’ association is now working with the Christchurch Disc Golf Association to establish the course, beginning with ordering the equipment. It hopes to have at least part of the course open by Christmas. “It will really be dependent on the timing of the supply of the equipment, because they have to manufacturer the baskets,” said Mr Baines. A promotional event will take place at Christmas in the Park on December 10. A temporary basket will be available for people to practice

on and find out more information about where the new course will be. There is currently one other course in Christchurch at Jellie Park. It is unsure when the Parklands course may get a permanent status. “There is a little bit of uncertainty even within the council ranks about how they grant permission, whether it’s a decision they vote on or whether there is a license granted to use the park for a particular purpose,” said Mr Baines.

Haeata students learn about healthy relationships By Sophie Cornish HAEATA Community Campus is the latest school to roll out the ‘Loves-Me-Not’ programme to students. The programme, which is a part of the Sophie Elliott Foundation, is designed to discuss and teach the importance of healthy relationships. Sophie Elliott was murdered

by her former boyfriend and university tutor, Clayton Weatherston, in 2008. The foundation aims to lower the levels of domestic violence through education. The programme explores qualities of good relationships, how to recognise early signs of abuse, understanding sexual consent, critical thinking about who is advantaged by societal myths, how to be an active bystander and how to take action for change. The workshop is delivered by three facilitators who are trained by the police, including one

teacher and one social worker per class. It begins with a 10min video introduced by Nigel Latta, a well-known clinical psychologist. Loves-Me-Not started in 2013 with nine secondary schools across New Zealand. Each year since then, it has increased so that, by 2017, 100 schools across the country have registered, nine of them in Canterbury.

World champ rowers return for open day WORLD CHAMPION rowers will return to the Avon Rowing Club’s open day on Saturday. Grace Prendergast won gold in the pair, Olivia Loe won gold in the double skull, John Storey won gold in the double skull and Sam Bosworth (coxswain) won bronze in Sam Bosworth the eight. James Lassche also competed in the eight but didn’t win a medal. The Avon rowers are now based in Cambridge but they are paying a special visit for the open Olivia Loe day where they will show off their medals and chat about being world class rowers. Current and past members of the club will attend as well as well as top secondary school rowers. AVOCADO AND CARAMELISED PINEAPPLE SALAD

Ingredients

Ribeye steaks, at least an 1.5 inches thick Olive oil Salt Fresh ground black pepper

2 Tbsp Brown sugar ½ Pineapple, peeled 2 Tbsp Butter 3 Avocados, firm but ripe ½ Red onion 100g Blue cheese, creamy ½ Red chilli 2 cups Salad leaves, washed

Directions Preheat your grill to high heat. If you have a sear burner and a steak that is more than an inch thick, get one side of the grill going at about medium-high in case you need to cook it through a little more after the sear. Remove the ribeye steaks from their packaging and rub them down with some olive oil and then coat a generous amount of salt and freshly ground black pepper. The olive oil provides just enough fat to help the salt and pepper create a great, caramelised crust. Clean and lubricate your grill grates with some cooking oil on a rolled up piece of paper towel (using tongs, of course). Place the ribeye steaks on the hottest part of the grill and then stand ready with the tongs.

Dressing 1 Orange, zest and juice 1 Chilli, finely chopped 1 tsp Ground cumin 4 Tbsp Avocado oil 1 to taste Salt & freshly ground pepper At this point, you are on flareup watch. The fat dripping off of the steaks could create a flare-up. If a flare-up occurs and doesn’t go away in a few seconds, simply use your tongs to slide the steaks away from the open flame until the flame dies down and then move them back over the heat. Continue to grill with the lid open for about 4-6min. Flip the steaks over onto the

other side, still over the hottest part of the grill. Grill the ribeye steaks for an additional 4-6min on the other side, lid open, for a medium-rare delicious steak. Remove the steaks from the grill and allow to rest for 5min before serving. The resting period is important so that the juices don’t run out when you cut into the ribeye, so be patient.

Hip pain: Do I have arthritis or could it be mainly my muscles?

he team at Physical Sense in Sydenham sees clients with a range of symptoms but many of their middle-aged and senior clients visit complaining of pain in one or both hips. Physiotherapist Ietje van Stolk suggests that a major part of the pain could be due to muscle pain rather than simply arthritis. “Even if an x-ray shows arthritis, the reason for the pain may be the muscles around the joint,” she explains. Alternatively, a back muscle could also be the cause, as shown in the image. Ietje recalls one case where an 89 year old client with severe arthritis who walked with a stick, told her, “I will end up in a wheelchair, I cannot put any weight through my right leg due to pain in my hip and buttock”. “Within 4 treatments, she was walking with her stick but without the severe pain,” says Ietje. “The arthritis was one of the factors that made her muscles spasm but the other was that older people move less and the flexed position the hip is in when we sit is particularly bad for the hip.” Ietje is happy with the fact that although the client was 89 and could have been “given up on” or told to live with the pain, she made a difference to

her health and wellbeing. At Physical Sense, hands-on techniques (massage and triggerpoint deactivation techniques) are used to release the muscles. The client also gets a home exercise program designed to mobilize and stretch the hip, strengthen the important core muscles and increase general strength and balance. They

teach a movement sequence that stretches the hip in all directions whilst the client is able to lie safely on their bed, perfect for older or less mobile clients. In many cases having the muscles released and being taught how to maintain it, is enough to stay on top of the problem. If severe arthritis is the underlying cause, some

maintenance therapy may be necessary, but that is often more affordable and, for older patients, better tolerated than surgery. In very few treatments the client will know if it is going to work for them or not, without financial commitment.

Learning first aid is not only a part of ensuring a safe work place, but also an integral part of our engagement with the wider community. We all learn the necessary skills to ensure that in times of emergency we are able to assist our work colleagues, but are we able to take these skills home, into the community or on to the sports field? not all work places are the same and the injury risk for each place can be wide and variable. The office attended by administrators does not carry the same risk as those people working with heavy machinery, or perhaps at some distance from a regular ambulance service. it is therefore essential that you pick the right first aid course to suit all of your activities – both professional and social. take, for example, an office worker who does not have a high risk work environment and whose concern might be to ensure that they can deal with minor cuts and superficial injuries, or the ability to perform effective CPr. These skills can be achieved on a course of eight hours duration and would generally fit into low to medium risk area. But take this same person on to a sports field either as a spectator or player when a higher level injury occurs. The eight hour course covering unit standards 6402 and 6401 (or 26551 and 26552) does not cover head neck and spinal injuries, eye injuries,

hypothermia and poisonings. The majority of injuries occur outside of the work place, in fact one in three injuries occurs in the home, making it the most common place for injuries to happen. new Zealand children are twice as likely to die through injury as children who live in australia. They mostly die as a result of motor vehicles accidents or falls in the home. fatalities from leisure and sport are not far behind those in the workplace. The wider 12 hour course teaches the additional unit standard 6400 and provides a wide knowledge base for medium to high risk environments. This course covers many of the skills required to deal with the most common injuries, such as falls (which can result in head, neck and spinal injuries) and dealing with complex scenes such as motor vehicle accidents. if you are not sure on the course best suited to your needs, ask your accredited first aid training provider. They can explain the course content and give you options that will best suit your needs. Look beyond the workplace and consider your family and your location. Check that you have a good quality first aid kit that is up-to-date with replenished items, and that everyone knows where it is located.

The newest arrival is the Cone Beam Computed Tomograph (CBCT), which provides a 3D image of the patient’s jaws and teeth through the latest digital imaging technology. As Keith explains, the current digital X-rays shows only a 2D image. The image is crisper but it sometimes leaves a few questions unanswered. Now with the complete 3D technology, he is able to have a much better understanding of problems in the patient’s mouth. “It’s a huge game changer and takes diagnostic imaging to a totally different level. It’s like having Superman’s extra pair of eyes to help with the diagnosis,” he says. “And it saves time as patients do not have to be referred elsewhere for the scans as we have the CBCT machine in our practice and the scan costs cheaper comparatively too”. The Surgery has also acquired a stateof-the-art patient sedation monitoring system, Capnograph, which is used for patients under IV sedation. Surgical or Dental treatment under IV sedation is an area of special interest for Keith, who is a dental surgeon, and he has carried out more than 1800 IV procedures since 2008. “Patient safety is our utmost priority when they are under sedation. Our Capnograph monitors their vital signs namely the respiratory gaseous exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, heart rate and Non-invasive intermittent blood pressure throughout the procedure.
